What to expect

The camera travels through the scene for the full 3 min, so the view opens and changes around you rather than waiting for you to look. Give yourself a moment to settle before you start turning your head.

It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the street reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

We tag this one adventurous, and it sits in Canary Islands alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. It is included with a subscription.

Tejeda, Gran Canaria, in VR180

Tejeda sits above 1,000 metres in the middle of Gran Canaria, inside the vast eroded basin that takes up the centre of the island. It is a small place of whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs on a shelf of rock, and it appears on the list of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Around it the ground falls away into volcanic ridges and terraced slopes, with Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga standing clear of the ranges nearby. Miguel de Unamuno described this interior as a petrified storm, which stays the best short description anyone has managed. Almond trees fill the terraces and blossom in late winter, and the island coast, an hour of switchbacks below, feels like a different country.

We filmed it as a journey with the camera moving, a little over three minutes through the village and its outlooks rather than a single fixed view. We tag it Adventurous. The view opens and changes around you as the camera travels, so give yourself a moment to settle before you start turning your head.

A mountain village is a stack of surfaces at different distances: a wall at two metres, a rooftop at twenty, a ridge at two kilometres. On a screen those flatten into one image. In stereoscopic VR180 they separate out properly, which is what makes standing in a street on the edge of a caldera feel like standing somewhere rather than looking at something.

Tejeda mountain village: common questions

Where is Tejeda in Gran Canaria?

In the mountainous centre of the island, above 1,000 metres, inside the great eroded basin that dominates inland Gran Canaria. It is roughly an hour of winding road from Las Palmas and from the southern coast, and Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga are close by.

Is Tejeda worth visiting?

It is one of the officially listed most beautiful villages in Spain, and it is the usual base for the Roque Nublo walk and the wider network of trails across the caldera. The almond blossom in late winter and the almond based sweets the village is known for draw their own visitors.

Can you visit Tejeda virtually?

Yes. We filmed Tejeda in stereoscopic VR180 as a moving journey of a little over three minutes, so you can walk the mountain village in a headset. It plays natively on Apple Vision Pro and in the browser on Meta Quest, Pico and Samsung Galaxy XR.
