What to expect

The camera travels through the scene for the full 5 min, so the view opens and changes around you rather than waiting for you to look. Give yourself a moment to settle before you start turning your head.

It is filmed in stereoscopic VR180, which means depth is real: near things sit close, far things stay far, and the water reads at proper scale instead of flattening onto a screen. Look up, look to the edges of the frame, and take your time. There is nothing to steer and nothing to learn.

We tag this one relaxing, and it sits in Montenegro alongside the rest of what we have filmed there. Create an account to watch this one in full.

Lake Skadar in VR180

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in southern Europe by surface area, spread across the border between Montenegro and Albania, with the Montenegrin side protected as a national park. It is shallow, warm and enormously productive: a wetland of reed beds, floating meadows of water lily that flower through late spring and early summer, and one of the last European breeding colonies of the Dalmatian pelican. Most visitors first see it from above, on the panoramic road along the northern shore where the Crnojevic river swings through the horseshoe bend at Pavlova Strana. From water level it is a different lake entirely, a maze of channels between reed walls that close over your head.

We filmed it from the water as a five minute drift with the camera moving, so the channels open and change around you rather than waiting for you to look. We tag it Relaxing despite the movement, and the landscape type is waterway. Give yourself a moment to settle before you start turning your head.

On a screen a reed bed becomes texture. In stereoscopic VR180 it becomes structure: individual stems pass close on either side while the far bank holds its distance, and the lily pads lie on a surface that is clearly below you. That near field detail is the part a flat video cannot give you, and it is most of the reason this one works in a headset.

Lake Skadar: common questions

Where is Lake Skadar?

On the border of Montenegro and Albania, inland from the Adriatic coast and south of Podgorica. Roughly two thirds of it is Montenegrin, protected as Skadar Lake National Park, and it is the largest lake in southern Europe by surface area.

What is the Lake Skadar panoramic road?

The scenic route along the northern shore, best known for the viewpoint above the horseshoe bend of the Crnojevic river at Pavlova Strana. Our experience is filmed at water level rather than from the road, among the reed channels and lily pads.

When do the water lilies flower on Lake Skadar?

The floating lily meadows are usually at their fullest from late spring into midsummer, which is also when the lake is busiest with boat trips. Pelicans, herons and cormorants use the same reed beds year round.
